Dikes road village

Dyke and road villages occur throughout Zeeland and are not, like the ring village and the front street village, mainly related to the old or new land. Dike villages, as the name suggests, originated along dikes and road villages along (an intersection of) roads. Dike villages have usually arisen more or less spontaneously and have an extremely simple linear plan. The villages are usually built along the inside of a sea dike (sometimes a canal or polder dike). After embankment of a new polder, expansion of the village was possible on the outside of the old sea dike, which no longer had a water-retaining function. A center is often lacking in a dike village and a church was only built if the number of inhabitants was large enough. Like dyke villages, road villages (also known as street villages) often originated without a plan as ribbon development along a polder road or a division of polder roads. , The crossroads village is a subtype that often arose in the larger polders from the 17th century. An intersection of two or more polder roads was chosen as the starting point for the settlement. corner the village pub. Sometimes the square is missing and the central center is formed by the cross of two roads or canals or a combination of both. The other buildings arose along one of the axes tapering to the intersection. Borssele is the most striking example of a crossroads village that has been planned according to a geometric design. , Schouwen-Duiveland: Ellemeet; Eastland; Scharendijke; Western chimneys; Zonnemaire; Sirjansland , Walcheren: Women's Polder; dishoek; Brigdamme, North and South Beveland: Baarland; Borssele; three ways; Heinkenszand; Hoedekenkerke; Krabbendijke; crowns; Kwadendamme; Lewedorp; Nieuwdorp; Ovezande; Rilland; 's Heerenhoek; weeping; Wilhelminadorp , Tholen: Anna Jacobapolder , Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen: Retranchement, Driewegen; Groenendijk; cow guard; roe pie; Lamb value; New Namur; Nieuwvliet; Ossisse; Sint Jansteen; Terhole; Follow value; Waterland church, ; South Village; South Sand; Giant's Corner; Zaamslagveer; New mill; Gray; Hengstdijk; Corner; Monastery Sands; Westdorpe; Leg of mutton; Pole; Schoondijke; Bouchauter harbour; Clinge; Heikant; impact; Zandstraat
