Iconic heritage - Historical landmarks (sight lines)

This historic landmarks map shows buildings that, when seen from a distance, are landmarks for a town, city or region because of their height. To arrive at this selection, categories of buildings from the national monuments register and the cultural-historical atlas were checked and assessed on the basis of their height. These are buildings that usually have a considerable height, such as windmills, churches, water towers, industrial buildings, country houses and castles, bridges, town halls, lighthouses, gates, offices, fortress towers and watchtowers.

lineage	The selection was made on the basis of the height of the monuments and does not take into account, for example, the (height) location of a building and elements such as plants that may restrict the view. However, the original location in relation to other buildings has been taken into account: for example, is a tower on the edge of a city, or is it enclosed by buildings. To assess this, a map of the land register with construction dates was used, supplemented with paintings of historic cityscapes. The monuments have been supplemented on the basis of overviews of the tallest buildings in the Netherlands. The height of the buildings has been taken from the National Monuments Register. This has been supplemented with information obtained from various websites, including www.molens.nl, www.watertorens.eu, www.skyscraperpage.com and www.landgoedenbuitenplaats-zh.nl. If no information about the height of the buildings could be found online, an estimate of the height category was made based on photos of the buildings. The years of construction of the buildings are based on information from the land registry
