Collection Provincial Archaeological Depot API

The province of South Holland stores and manages its archaeological finds in the Provincial Archaeological Depot for archaeological finds: https://archeologie.zuid-holland.nl. The depot lends these finds and documentation to museums and other cultural institutions. This can be for scientific research, but also for activities aimed at introducing a broad public to archaeology. The finds in the depot vary in age from 7500 years to 100 years old. The oldest excavation documentation resulting from archaeological research dates back to 1947. The collection mainly consists of finds such as pottery, glass, bone and metal. A small part of the collection consists of objects made of organic material, such as leather knife scabbards, wooden objects and fish traps made of thin branches. The accompanying documentation states the exact location of the find(s) and their possible mutual relationship. In this way it remains possible to look at old excavations with new insights and to draw new conclusions. The municipalities of The Hague, Rijswijk, Gouda, Rotterdam, Leiden, Gorinchem, Dordrecht, Delft and Vlaardingen have their own municipal depot and manage the finds and documentation themselves within the boundaries of their municipalities.
