Amsterdam has been planting trees for more than 400 years. However, storms, tree diseases and the dynamics of the city mean that the oldest trees in this city are 'only' about 250 years old. The canal pattern with rows of trees is unique in the world. In order to better protect and manage valuable trees and wood stands, city districts - or the central city for metropolitan areas - draw up lists of wood stands worthy of protection. This is done on the basis of tree regulations. The protected status means that, in principle, a tree is not felled. Extra attention is also paid to management and maintenance. The various lists have been brought together in this file.
