The Hamburg city cleaning department carries out the winter service for bicycle traffic as part of its capacity on a selected route network that was defined by the authority for traffic and mobility change. The route network consists of various cycle traffic facilities such as separate cycle paths, shared footpaths and cycle paths, cycle lanes, protective lanes, protected bike lanes and cycle lanes. There is no regular winter service by the Hamburg city cleaning department on the other cycle lanes. The residents are not responsible for winter service on areas exclusively used for bicycle traffic. The SRH secures structural cycle paths in accordance with the requirements of the Hamburg Roads Act with gritting materials, primarily fine-grained gravel. According to legal regulations, wet salt or salt can only be used for stretches at roadway level, such as cycle lanes, cycle lanes and protective lanes, etc. This is done wherever it is operationally and logistically possible. The winter service is carried out mechanically with large and small gritting vehicles. All routes are processed twice and (as far as operationally possible) also continuously. Processing starts so early that the first processing run is carried out before the start of rush hour or the main usage time. In addition to the cycle lanes, the Hamburg city cleaning department is responsible for winter road maintenance. Important main roads and routes with regular bus services are processed first. After that, the connecting routes between these roads will be secured.
