water storage capacity of the soil

The criterion "water storage capacity of the soil" is used to evaluate the sub-soil function "component of the water cycle habitat". Soil absorbs rainwater and stores it in its pores. They therefore have a significant influence on the water balance. A high water storage capacity distinguishes soils as particularly worthy of protection. The "water storage capacity" is evaluated by assessing the usable field capacity of the potential root area up to a maximum soil depth of 1.5 metres. The key data for this are: Soil type of the fine soil, coarse soil proportions, rooting depth, usable field capacity, soil density and humus content of the soil. Mapping data (lead profile data) from the FIS Boden of the Free State of Saxony are used to derive the water storage capacity. Soils on high slopes receive valuation discounts. The terrain position and the climatic site conditions are not directly evaluated in the assessment, although these are relevant for the water storage capacity.
