A seamless digital elevation model (DEM) of the whole Italian territory, originally named TINITALY/01 (also known as the "TINITALY" DEM, in short), was presented in 2007 (Tarquini et al., 2007). This DEM was obtained from heterogeneous vector datasets, mostly consisting in elevation contour lines and elevation points from several sources. The input vector database was carefully cleaned up to obtain a seamless TIN derived by using the DEST algorithm, which enhances the TIN mesh with respect to the standard Delaunay triangulation. The whole TINITALY/01 DEM was converted in grid format (10-m cell size) according to a tiled structure composed of 193 elements. See references for additional details.
In January 2023, a new version of the TINITALY DEM is released, named TINITALY/1.1. In this version several inaccuracies of the former DEM are corrected. Along with the upgraded DEM, a suite of DEM-derived products are now available as WMS, WMTS and WCS services: (i) shaded relief map; (ii) slope map using 2.5σ clipping as technique for image enhancement; (iii) Sky view Factor (SVF) map using 2.5σ clipping as technique for image enhancement; (iv) SVF map using equal area equalization as technique for image enhancement; (v) openness down map using equal area equalization as technique for image enhancement; and (vi) Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) composition image with slope (2.5σ clipping) as saturation and SVF (2.5σ clipping) as value, according to RRIM (Red Relief Image Maps) style maps. For more information about the generation of the DEM-derived products refer to Favalli and Fornaciai (2017) - http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.geomorph.2017.02.029.
DEM data are arranged for download in 193 zipped files and the grid is encoded as “ESRI ASCII Raster” UTM 32N WGS84.
The DEM and DEM-derived products are provided by means of the following OGC web services: WMS (Web Map Service), WMTS (Web Map Tile Service) and WCS (Web Coverage Service).
