Shoreline Evolution Analysis - Rates of change of the shoreline from 2005 to 2011

Analysis of the evolution of the shoreline from 2005 to 2011 carried out using the digitized shorelines starting from the orthophotoplans of the 2005 Costa Flight and the 2011 AGEA Flight. The analysis was carried out using an extension of ArcView 3.2 called Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This extension allows you to define a landward baseline, generate equidistant orthogonal transects and calculate rates of change. For each transect, the variation of the shoreline (positive = progress; negative = erosion), the progress-erosion rate (metres/year) and various statistical parameters are then calculated.

lineage The shoreline evolution measurements were performed using the shorelines digitized on the 2005 Costa Flight and the 2011 AGEA Flight. A ground baseline was created from which orthogonal transects were generated with equidistance of 20 meters, for each transect the variations in meters have been extracted starting from the oldest shoreline to the most recent one, therefore positive values indicate an advance, while negative values indicate an erosion of the coast. On the basis of the time elapsed between one aerial shot and the next, the "Rate of variation" of the shoreline expressed in metres/year was calculated for each transect. Finally, the 2011 shoreline was divided into various stretches (approx. 20 metres) in correspondence with each single transect which is located in the median position, the variation values of the respective transects have been reported on each single section.
