The San Leonardo River is the main watercourse of the northern coast of Sicily. Its hydrographic basin extends for about 506 km2 of which about four hundred have been declared mountainous with Royal Decree No. 3301 of 11/2/1933. The basin develops between the coastal chain (Monti di Trabia, Monte S. Calogero) and the northern offshoots of the Sicani Mountains (M. Cardellia, M. Barracù, Monti di Prizzi); it borders to the east with the basin of the Torto river, to the SE with that of the Platani river, to the south with that of the. Sosio, to the SW with that of the left Belice and to the west with that of the F. Milicia. In particular, the watershed line that delimits the basin develops to the east along the peaks of M. Pileri (m. 378), Cozzo Guardiola (m. 700), M. Rotondo (m. 845), Portella dei Miseri (m. 600), Serra Sambuchi (m. 624), Pizzo di Sughero (m. 620) and Cozzo Castagna del Barone (m. 714). Still to the east, the watershed continues along the peaks of Il Pizzo (793 m), Cozzo la Vanedda (631 m), Montagnola (833 m) and Cozzo Todaro (875 m). To the south, proceeding from east to west, the watershed develops along the peaks of P.lla S.Francesco, Cozzo Volturo (m. 1,103), P.lla dell'Olmo (m. 1,013), M. Sparagio (m. 1,118), Serra Pietre Falls, Cozzo dei Monaci (m. 871), P.lla di Sarullo (m. 699), Rocche S. Felice (m. 806), Costa Raia (m. 964) and Pizzo Cangialoso (m. 1,457). To the west the watershed line follows the ridge generated by the succession of peaks of M.Barracù (1,420 m), M. Cardellia (1,266 m), Cozzo Spolentino (1,000 m), Cozzo DonnaGiacoma (1,613 m), Cozzo Ramusa (1,613 m 959), Rocca Busambra (1,614 m) and Cozzo Bileo (1,007 m). The watershed continues along the peaks of Pizzo Lungocucco (718 m.), Cozzo diFerro (620 m.), Pizzo Avvoltoio (747 m.), Serra Capezzana (768 m.), Portella di Ventimiglia (672 m.), Pizzo di Cascio (1,054 m), Pizzo Garofano (1,204 m), Cozzo Cenere (438 m), Cozzo Bugio (421 m) and, finally, M. Rosamarina (540 m). The shape of the hydrographic basin is sub - circular, with a pronounced northern appendage extending in the NNE-SSW direction from the mouth towards the mountain area. The basin reaches its maximum width, equal to about 22 km, to the south; in the northern part, on the other hand, the width is significantly reduced, down to just over 1 km, at about 3.5 km from the mouth, in correspondence with the Rosamarina gorge, where the course of the river has been blocked by the dam of the same name. The latter was built during the 1980s by ESA. (EnteSviluppo Agricolo) and the volume of the reservoir created is approximately 100 million m 3. The hydrographic basin of the San Leonardo river falls entirely within the territory of the province of Palermo and is included in sheets No. 608 Caccamo, No. 609 Termini Imerese and No. ° 620 Lercara Friddi of the Map of Italy in scale 1:50,000 of the I.G.M. The municipal territories of the following municipalities fall within the basin: Baucina, Caccamo, Campofelice di Fitalia, Castronovo di Sicilia, Cefalà Diana, Ciminna, Corleone, Godrano, Lercara Friddi, Marineo, Mezzojuso, Palazzo Adriano, Prizzi, Roccapalumba, TerminiImerese, Ventimiglia di Sicilia, Vicari and Villafrati. In particular, of the eighteen aforementioned municipalities, those whose inhabited center falls within the basin are: Caccamo, Campofelice diFitalia, Ciminna, Godrano, Mezzojuso, the fraction of "Filaga" in the municipality of Prizzi, the fraction "Regalgioffoli" in the municipality of Roccapalumba, Termini Imerese, Ventimiglia di Sicilia and Vicari. In the basin it is possible to recognize the anthropic action, as well as in the inhabited centers and in the agricultural territories, in numerous transport infrastructures. Among these, the most important are the Palermo-Messina railway headquarters, the road headquarters of the S.S. 113 Palermo-Messina; that of the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, which crosses the northern part of the basin with a prevalent E-W trend; finally, the roadways of the Palermo-Agrigento arterial road (S.S. 121) and of the S.S. 285, S.S. 118 and S.S. 188.
