lineage | The data contained in ITED were obtained mainly from the analysis of historical reports. Starting from the descriptions of Italian tsunamis contained in EMTC, each single observation of tsunami effects has been associated to a geographically identifiable location and municipality (Observation Points-OP). The analysis and interpretation of the descriptive sources allowed, in many cases, to extrapolate quantitative data such as runup, inundation, sea retreat, number of observed waves and first sea movement, which are then associated to the OP. In addition, the interpretation of tsunami effects also allowed to estimate the tsunami intensity for each OP. The temporal distribution of tsunami intensities assigned in a locality (tsunami history) indicates how many times a site has been hit by a tsunami in the past and how severe was the impact.
