Italian Tsunami Effects Database (ITED)

ITED (Italian Tsunami Effects Database) is the first database of descriptions of tsunami effects observed along the Italian coasts from 79 A.D. to date and was created as an extension of the Italian part of EMTC. ITED provides information on how much and how a location has been affected over time by the effects of tsunamis. For each observation point, ITED contains the description of the effects produced by the tsunami, together with the relevant bibliographic references and it is possible to know the \"tsunami history\" at each observation point. currently ITED contains 300 observations of tsunami effects (OP) in 186 places (PN) along the italian coasts and it is available through a specially designed Webapp, developed in Esri ArcGIS environment. The Webapp also allows you to make a switch on EMTC2.0 to have more information available about an event.

lineage The data contained in ITED were obtained mainly from the analysis of historical reports. Starting from the descriptions of Italian tsunamis contained in EMTC, each single observation of tsunami effects has been associated to a geographically identifiable location and municipality (Observation Points-OP). The analysis and interpretation of the descriptive sources allowed, in many cases, to extrapolate quantitative data such as runup, inundation, sea retreat, number of observed waves and first sea movement, which are then associated to the OP. In addition, the interpretation of tsunami effects also allowed to estimate the tsunami intensity for each OP. The temporal distribution of tsunami intensities assigned in a locality (tsunami history) indicates how many times a site has been hit by a tsunami in the past and how severe was the impact. Italian Tsunami Effects Database (ITED) is documented by Maramai, A., Graziani, L., Brizuela, B. (2021).
