The pages of the hydrogeological map [HK 50] of North Rhine-Westphalia on a scale of 1 : 50,000 show the distribution, location and rock composition of the aquifers and aquifers occurring in the map area. In the main maps, loose and solid rock are assigned to different permeability classes according to their hydraulic properties. In the loose rock, the thickness of the usable groundwater space is also shown. The maps also contain information on the location of springs, wells, groundwater measuring points and potential groundwater hazards (excavations, embankments). Hydrogeological series of sections give an impression of the position, the thickness and the hydraulic connections of the hydrogeological units. In newer sheets, another map shows the distribution and composition of overlying layers and their protective function for the groundwater, the risk of substances entering the groundwater is classified. Information on geogenic groundwater quality is also given here. Additional maps (e.g. geological overview, quaternary basis and permeability of the surface layers, groundwater analyzes or basic processing) are partially included. The construction of the groundwater surface - also shown on an inset map - is based on digital data from the State Environment Agency of North Rhine-Westphalia (LUA), Essen. Additional information about groundwater levels and water protection areas can be obtained there. Some of the map sheets are accompanied by short explanations with a list of publications, in which the focus is on the content and presentation of the maps as well as on groundwater management and the prospects of the strata occurring in the map area.
