Arpa Piemonte - Sentinel 2 image mosaic - Summer 2020

The dataset constitutes a mosaic of images acquired by the Sentinel 2A satellite (European Copernicus programme) during the summer of 2020. The images are suitably mosaiced to cover the Piedmont area according to a series of 12 tiles and are published in natural colours: bands 4 ( red), 3 (green) and 2 (blue) of the MSI sensor (13 channels in the visible / infrared VNIR). The mosaic was created by Arpa Piemonte as part of the activities connected to the 2019 national Soil Consumption Monitoring project conducted by the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) through the coordination of ISPRA and the involvement of various regional agencies. The project aims to monitor the transformations of the territory due to urban, infrastructural, commercial expansions, etc. with the consequent loss of natural, agricultural and semi-natural soil, understood as an essential and fundamentally non-renewable environmental resource. The analysis methodology uses, for the first time on a national scale in a unitary and homogeneous way, the new Sentinel 2A/B images which, given their level of detail and the frequency of revisiting guaranteed by the Sentinel mission, allow to obtain visions of whole of the national territory in a periodic and constant manner (multi-temporal analysis). The comparison between these allows us to highlight the main transformations of the territory and the related phenomena of land consumption (expansion of urban settlements, new roads, shipbuilding for new works, etc. ).

lineage The dataset constitutes a mosaic of images acquired by the Sentinel 2A satellite during the summer of 2020. Although the images that make up the mosaic refer to a single season, they are not necessarily contemporary: in fact, several satellite passages are needed to cover the entire regional territory . The images were downloaded from the European site https://scihub.copernicus.eu/ which makes available all the satellite images acquired within the Copernicus project. The choice of images to use (in the form of tiles) falls on those with less cloud cover and, when incomplete, on those that integrate the missing portions. After a suitable composition of bands (4 out of 13 available) and visual stretching to improve readability, they are mosaiced and published in the form of a cache.
