GES map noise exposure - state 2016

Map of the Health Effects Screening score (GES) of environmental noise in Flanders. The indicator is based on the Lden strategic noise load maps for the reference year 2016 for major roads, major railways and for Brussels airport, supplemented by the Lden strategic noise load maps for the agglomeration of Antwerp (reference year 2016), Ghent (reference year 2016) and Bruges (reference year 2011). ) as approved by the Flemish government in 2018 in implementation of the European Environmental Noise Directive. The existing indicators were converted into nuisance-equivalent Lden values in order to arrive at a cumulative noise load map. The map can be used to detect potential problem areas for environmental noise. However, the map is not area-wide since the noise impact was only calculated for major traffic infrastructures and the three agglomerations, which means that data is missing for, for example, local roads or industrial sources outside the agglomerations. As a result, no data is available for many environments, and noise levels are underestimated at some locations. The cumulative nuisance-equivalent Lden values were then divided into classes using the Dutch Health Effect Screening (GES) method, which provide an insight into potential health effects as a first indication of the local environmental noise in the mapped areas. The GES classes were defined in this way: GES 0 73dB(A) = "very insufficient". Scores from GES 6 and higher can be linked to the occurrence of cardiovascular disease on the basis of evidence from epidemiological research. However, negative effects on health can also occur at lower noise levels.
