Geological overview map of the Federal Republic of Germany 1:200,000 (GÜK200) - CC 8742 Bad Reichenhall

Building blocks of the Eastern Alps are shown on the Bad Reichenhall sheet: Niedere and Schladminger Tauern, Salzkammergut, Berchtesgaden Alps as well as Höllengebirge, Totes gebirge, Hagengebirge, Leoganger Steinberge, Tennengebirge, Dientener Berge and Steinernes Meer. The subalpine molasse basin limits the alpine units in the north. The tertiary sediment filling of the Molasse Basin is mostly covered by quaternary layers (e.g. fluviatile and glacifluviatile gravel and sands). The Helvetic zone of the Alps (Cretaceous and Tertiary), which adjoins the Molasse to the south, is also only sporadically exposed under the Quaternary cover. The flysch zone is much wider. The Cretaceous deep water formations are characterized by alternating clayey-marly or sandy-calcareous layers. The central part of the map sheet is taken up by a zone of interlocking or bordering blocks and nappes characterized by folding, scaling, thrusting and thrusting. The Triassic (e.g. Wettersteinkalk, Hauptdolomit, Dachsteinkalk) and Jurassic sediments belonging to the Tyrolean thrust mass of the Limestone Alps dominate the area. The Tyrolean includes the Göll Massif, Staufen-Höllengebirge Nappe, Totengebirge Nappe, Warscheneck Nappe, Werfen Scale Zone and Mandling Scale. They are connected to other East Alpine nappe components: Bajuvarikum: Allgäu nappe, Langbath clod, Reichraminger nappe; Berchtesgaden ceiling and Dachstein ceiling; Hallstatt zones and clods: Lofer-Reichenhall zone, Hallein-Berchtesgaden zone, Ischl-Ausseer zone, Grundlsee zone, Lammermasse, Plassen, Mitterndorfer clods; Gosau basin with Cretaceous sandstone and marlstone. The greywacke zone (Palaeozoic greywacke, argillaceous and siliceous slate) joins to the south. Minor inclusions of greenschist, metadiabase, carbonate and siliceous marble also occur. Metamorphic rocks (slate, phyllite, gneiss, quartzite) of the Central Alps are recorded on the southern edge of the map sheet. From west to east, the Tauern shale envelope of the Penninic, the Penninic-Radstadt mixed zone, the Radstadt complex and the East Alpine old crystalline can be demarcated. In addition to the legend, which provides information about the age, genesis and petrography of the units shown, a tectonic overview map explains the regional geological structure in the map section. A geological section provides additional insights into the structure of the underground. The N-S profile crosses the Molasse sediments, the flysch zone, the Tyrolean thrust mass of the Limestone Alps with embedded Lammermasse, the Penninic-Radstadt mixing zone and ends in the Penninic of the Central Alps.
