Geological overview map of the Federal Republic of Germany 1:200,000 (GÜK200) - CC 4726 Goslar

Blatt Goslar shows a very interesting part of the geology of Germany. In the central part of the map is the Harz Mountains, in the north the Harz foreland with the Subherzyn Depression and in the south the Thuringian Basin. The Harz is one of the low mountain ranges of Variscan folded and slate Paleozoic. Most of the geologic units and faults strike southwest-northeast. The lodging of the magmatic intrusive complexes (Brocken, Ramberg and Oker granite or Bad Harzburg gabbro) took place in the Lower Carboniferous, while the volcanic rocks near Ilfeld ("Ilfeld porphyrite" or "Ilfeld melaphyr") pushed up in the Permian. The Harz can be divided into three zones. The Upper Harz includes the Clausthal Kulmfalten zone, the Upper Harz Devon saddle and the Acker-Bruchberg zone between Osterode and Bad Harzburg. The middle Harz is formed by the Blankenburg fold zone with the Elbingeröder complex, the Tanner greywacke range and the Sieber trough. The Lower Harz includes the Harzgeröder fold zone (olisthostrom landslides) with the Selke and Südharz troughs (sliding ceilings) and the epimetamorphic of the Wippra zone. Disturbances, whose frequent occurrence is known, but whose progression is often uncertain, were treated cautiously. Zechstein sediments surround the Harz Mountains, especially in its southern and southwestern borders. Cretaceous sediments are exposed in the Subhercynian depression, which are largely overlaid by Quaternary loess and are bordered by thin outcrops of Triassic sediments. To the west of the Harz Mountains is the northern Leinetal Graben with Mesozoic sediments (Keuper to Malm) and the elevation of the Rhüden Saddle, on whose Buntsandstein formation the Lower Saxon reorganization of the Buntsandstein is based. The southern part of the sheet is occupied by the Triassic of the Eichsfeld-Thuringian Basin (Keuper to Buntsandstein), from which the chalk outcrop of the Ohm Mountains and the Upper Paleozoic sediments of the Kyffhäuser Mountains with its Precambrian crystalline complex protrude. Here, too, there are overlays by quaternary loose sediments, mainly loess from the Weichselian period. In addition to the legend, which provides information about the age, genesis and petrography of the units shown, a profile section provides insights into the structure of the subsoil. From north to south it crosses the Subhercynian Basin, the northern Harz rim thrust fault, the Harz with the Eckergneiss and Brocken granite, the Eichsfeld-Thuringian Basin with the Ohmgebirge and the Eichenberg-Gothaer Graben zone.
