Geological overview map of the Federal Republic of Germany 1:200,000 (GÜK200) - CC 4710 Münster

The Münster chalk basin is recorded on the Münster sheet, which is bounded to the south by the outcrop of the Ruhr Carboniferous. At the southern edge of the map section are the Devonian rocks of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. In the Münster Cretaceous Basin, the fault blocks of the basement are overlaid by layers of up to 2000 m thick Cretaceous sediments. The trough structure causes older and older sedimentary rocks to bite outwards from the central area of the basin, i. H. the Campan in the center is followed by Santon, Coniac, Turon and Cenoman at the edge of the basin. The Upper Cretaceous sediments are mainly limestone and marl rocks. T. are covered by quaternary loose sediments. In addition to boulder clay from the Saale glacial ground moraine, overlays by aeolian and fluviatile deposits from the Vistula glaciation are widespread. A special feature is the Münsterländer Hauptkieszug, which crosses the chalk basin from north-west to south-east and is recorded here in the map near Münster. The wall-like, narrow ridge of well-layered gravel (Os) was created by meltwater from the Drenthe Stadial. In terms of area, Holocene river, moor and lake deposits are less important than Ice Age relics. The sediment layers of the Münstersche Kreidesenke, which are very strongly bent up at the north-east edge, form the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest, which is cut in the north-east corner of the map sheet. To the south, the chalk basin is bordered by a narrow strip of Upper Carboniferous clay and siltstone. This Ruhrcarbon also marks the border to the Rhenish Slate Mountains in the south. The Rheinisches Schiefergebirge is one of the low mountain ranges of folded and slate Palaeozoic. The Sauerland, the northernmost part of the slate mountains, is cut into in the map section. Devonian sedimentary rocks (mainly Middle Devonian clay slate and sandstone) determine the picture. The intercalations of volcanic rocks are also striking: in the Sauerland, the term main greenstone refers to the succession of diabases and shellstones (foliated diabase and keratophyrt tuff) with intercalated layers of sediment. In the Sauerland, the following individual structures can be distinguished from west to east: Remscheider saddle, Lüdenscheider Mulde, Ebbe saddle and Attendorn-Elsper Mulde. While older sediments of the Lower Devonian (Ems, Siegen) appear in the saddle structures, younger deposits have been preserved in the synclines, such as the Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous in the Attendorn-Elsper Mulde. In addition to the legend, which provides information about the age, genesis and petrography of the units shown, a geological section provides insights into the structure of the subsoil. The north-south profile intersects the Munster Cretaceous Depression, the Ruhr Carboniferous and the Devonian sedimentary strata of the Rhenish Slate Mountains.
