In the Italian administrative geography, the fraction is an administrative entity belonging to a municipality, consisting of "an area of the municipal territory usually including a town, as well as inhabited nuclei or scattered houses gravitating towards the centre"; this gravitation exists when the inhabitants of the nuclei and of the scattered houses are attracted by the centre, that is, they want to compete with it for reasons of supply, worship, education, work, business and the like; in rare cases a fraction can also belong to two or more different municipalities.
