Dedicated dikes in Lower Saxony

Main levees are levees designed to protect an area from storm surges. Flood dikes are dikes that serve to protect an area from flooding. Protective dykes are dykes above a barrage, which serve to protect an area from water that cannot drain away because the tidal water is blocked. Dikes of the 2nd dyke line limit flooding in the protected area if a main dyke or barrage breaks. Dykes are given their character by dedication, which the dyke authority pronounces by ordinance. The provisions of the Niedersächsisches Deichgesetz (NDG) apply to dedicated dikes.
