In order to assess the structure and development of road haulage, the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) carries out representative surveys of information on companies that operate road haulage. They serve the purpose of recognizing developments in the transport and logistics market at an early stage and should, among other things, contribute to maintaining the functionality of the transport industry, which is predominantly characterized by medium-sized companies. The survey on the "Structure of companies in commercial road haulage and own-account transport" is based on the Traffic Statistics Act (VerkStatG). The survey covers all companies headquartered in Germany that use trucks, including trailers, with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons for road haulage. It covers a representative selection of no more than 10% of companies that carry out road haulage as their main, secondary or auxiliary activity. As part of the survey, the selected companies are asked for information on their economic activities, the number of vehicles used to transport goods by vehicle and body type and on the structure of the workforce, and presented in a differentiated manner according to different criteria.
