Channels and districts

This file contains canals and districts located within the province of Groningen. The province of Groningen focuses on the preservation and possible restoration of canals and districts of valuable landscape and cultural-historical value and the associated elements such as abandoned (locks), bridges, etc. These canals and districts are characteristic of the Veenkoloniën, the southern part of the Westerkwartier and some small areas in Westerwolde. Many channels and districts have already been muted because they have lost their function. The canals and neighborhoods are further affected by agricultural use, in particular by gradually filling in with waste material. Due to the lack of maintenance, many neighborhoods become landslide. As a result, the peat colonial landscape loses one of its characteristic features. To prevent this, rules have been drawn up in Provincial Environmental Ordinance 2016 for the protection of the remaining canals and neighborhoods and the associated supporting elements.
