Landdefenses

A landweer is a late medieval (often 14th or 15th century) earthwork that was built to secure the territory outside a settlement. Land defenses are about two meters high – and including dry moats on both sides of the embankment – four to ten meters wide. The earthen walls were densely planted with thorns and undergrowth or sometimes with palisades. For example, they formed considerable obstacles for unwanted visitors. Most remnants of land defenses are located in Limburg and on the sandy soils of Gelderland and Overijssel. A large part of the approximately 100 land defenses mapped in the Netherlands has completely disappeared. The 'Landweeren' dataset consists of a line file and a point file.
