Storage potential in the Breda formation

With high temperature storage (HTO) a permeable package is used to store (a surplus of) hot water, so that it can be extracted when needed. Usually two different temperatures are used: 90 degrees Celsius for the middle well, surrounded by a “buffer zone” with wells where water of 40 degrees Celsius is injected. The potency calculation is based on an average temperature of the two: 65 degrees Celsius. The average temperature of the Breda Formation is 28 degrees Celsius. The injected water has a higher temperature, and therefore a lower viscosity. This viscosity is 0.00043 pascal second (Pa.s) and the viscosity for water at 28 degrees is 0.00083 Pa.s. This means that it will be possible to extract the water at a higher flow rate than in the case of shallow geothermal energy (OGT). The conversion factor for the Breda Formation is 1.93. The flow rate to be extracted will therefore be almost twice as high with HTO as with OGT.
