Change in openness (Monitor Landscape)

The openness of the landscape is determined by the elements higher than eye level in the wider area: slopes, ascending vegetation such as forests, canals and hedgerows, and the buildings of towns, villages, homes and businesses. The openness indicator shows how many hectares you can see, up to a distance of 2200 meters, from a certain place; the greater the number of hectares that you can oversee, the greater the openness. The indicator is part of the Landscape Monitor. The monitor shows the changes in our landscape on the basis of six indicators. These are: buildings, land use, openness, ascending greenery, historical linear elements and relief. The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, Kadaster, LandschappenNL and Wageningen University & Research developed the Landscape Monitor on behalf of the Ministries of BZK (Interior Affairs), OCW (Education, Culture and Science) and LNV (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality).
