Strategic drinking water reserves

In order to continue to guarantee the drinking water supply in the longer term, the province has designated a number of areas as strategic drinking water reserves in the Vision on Spatial Planning and Mobility for the Province of South Holland. The groundwater in these areas is reserved for future drinking water supply. Areas are indicated indicatively and are located on both sides of the Lek and in parts of the Vijfheerenlanden, Alblasserwaard and the island of Dordrecht. A connection has been sought with the existing extractions. The reservation means that a number of functions and developments are excluded in these areas, and that other functions that have an adverse effect on the quality of the groundwater and pose a risk to the drinking water supply must be dealt with carefully. The precise elaboration of the protection level for these areas will take place during the revision of the Provincial Environmental Ordinance (PMV).
