Signaling card Heat Cold Storage, Restrictions

The signaling map shows the potential for heat and cold storage (TES) in South Holland. An ATES system stores excess heat and cold for use at a later time. There are "open" and "closed" systems. A closed system stores the heat relatively shallow in underground pipes and have a limited capacity. Open systems consist of a doublet of two bubbles of water (hot and cold) in suitable layers of earth (aquifer), into which water is pumped in and out. The map relates to the suitability of the subsurface for open ATES systems in the 2nd and 3rd aquifer. The map also contains the areas where thermal energy storage is limited or not permitted.
