Environmental impact measurements Nature compensation second Maasvlakte

Concerns monitoring data. In the period 2008-2013, the Port of Rotterdam Authority built the first phase of Maasvlakte 2. The new port covers about 2.5% of the total Voordelta, a Natura2000 area. According to the Environmental Impact Report (EIA), both the construction and the presence of the port have effects on the animal and plant species present. The effects of the construction and presence of Maasvlakte 2 on nature and the living environment have been compensated and mitigated with various measures. For example, a seabed protection area of 25,000 ha has been established in the Voordelta (10x the size of the surface of the new port) with resting areas for birds within it. In addition, a new dune area was created in 2009 at 's Gravezande (Spanjaardsduin) to compensate for the nitrogen deposition that will increase after the Maasvlakte 2 is put into use. Various measures have also been taken to compensate and mitigate the effects of the construction. To monitor the effectiveness of these measures, three Monitoring and Evaluation Plans (MEP) have been drawn up and implemented.
