Recreational walking routes - Historical walking paths north-east Fryslân

A network of 50 Historic Hiking Trails has been developed in this region: 400 kilometers in total. These paths or remnants of them have been restored where possible and connected to existing hiking options. This creates new, fully-fledged routes. These special walking routes partly lead over old footpaths such as churches, hunting and school paths and disused trade and pilgrimage routes. When compiling the network, quiet (unpaved) roads and cycle paths were used as much as possible. Part of the hiking trails run across farmland and through nature reserves.
