Historical geography - towpaths and towpaths

File with historical towpaths and towpaths. These roads were originally intended to pull barges. In the beginning by manpower, later by draft animals. The system of canals and channeled waterways with towpaths on the top of the dike came to full development in the 17th and 18th centuries. The difference between a towpath and a drawway lies in the width of the cross-section of the passable part along the waterway. In some places along the paths there are still roller poles to pull a ship through a bend or out of the mouth of a harbor (Haulerwijk, Stavoren).
