Flood plains are areas that are inundated during high water, flow through them or are used for flood retention. This includes in particular areas between surface waters and dykes or high banks. The basis for calculation is a nationwide flood event, which is statistically to be expected once every 100 years. The designation of flood areas is one of the strategic precautionary measures in flood protection with direct planning law effects, such as restrictions on the designation or expansion of municipal building areas.
