Outer dyke areas

Areas outside the dykes are spread throughout Zeeland, particularly in the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde. They consist of complexes of mud flats and salt marshes that lie against the land and the flats located slightly further from the coast. Sint Philipsland is completely surrounded by mud flats and salt marshes; between Noord-Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland and there are some large flats (including Neeltje Jans). A large area of areas outside the dykes used to be inhabited, but 'drowned' as a result of dike breaches and flooding: the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe and the Verdronken Land van Zuid-Beveland.
