Landscape valuable dikes

This file contains dikes of valuable landscape value located within the province of Groningen. A dike is a water-retaining structure, usually raised earth and whether or not covered with stones or asphalt. Intended to protect land behind it from flooding. The province of Groningen focuses on the preservation and possible restoration of dykes of valuable landscape and cultural-historical value and the associated elements such as gullies, drinking floats, denominations and shot beam sheds. These mainly old sleeper dikes are characteristic of the Eemsdelta, the Oldambt and the Wadden coast area. The old dikes can be affected by agricultural use, in particular by leveling and the tearing of grassland. The filling up and closing of the gullies and drinking pods, and the breaking down of denominations and shot bar sheds, is also a loss of the characteristic value. To prevent this, the Provincial Environmental Ordinance 2016 has drawn up rules for the protection of the old dikes and the associated supporting elements.
