Lost medieval forest

In the Middle Ages, the Netherlands was rapidly deforested and around 1650 there was almost no forest left. The 'Historical Mentions' map shows where the last forests were, at least the forests we know from historical records. And the map 'forest place names' shows the location of places and hamlets whose medieval name refers to forest. A lot of forest had already disappeared in the Middle Ages, but there was still forest in these places when the settlements arose. Different types of forest names indicate different types of medieval forest. There are regional differences in this.
