Thickness clay cover

The map of clay cover thickness is also a product of the peat thickness map that was compiled by Alterra Wageningen UR (2016) on behalf of the province of South Holland. Profile descriptions were used to determine the thickness of the clay cover, which were also used for the peat thickness map (De Vries, 1999). And if no profiles were known, then 'average' layer thicknesses were used according to the legend to the Soil Map. Because the Soil Map provides information up to 120 cm, clay packages that are thicker are classified in a separate class (>=120 cm). The thickness of the clay cover is important for the oxidation of the underlying peat. The thickness of the clay cover indicates the vulnerability of oxidation of underlying peat by groundwater works, deep processing by (agricultural) construction machines.
